Their Story
Dale Wayne Means was a 23-year-old from Jordan, Minnesota. He served as a Lance Corporal with Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 15, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of the I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).
On November 18, 2012, Means died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident in Helmand province, according to a U.S. Department of Defense news release. By late 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with a significant concentration of U.S. and allied forces operating in Helmand province, a longtime Taliban stronghold and center of the opium trade.
Following his death, Means's body was returned to the United States. He was buried with military honors at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota, according to local obituaries and cemetery records. His family and community in Jordan held memorial services.
Lance Corporal Means is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on the 'Faces of the Fallen' database by The Washington Post. His name is also inscribed on the Minnesota Veterans Memorial on the state capitol grounds.
