U.S. Army Private Colman Joseph Meadows III, 19, of Senoia, Georgia, was killed in action on December 16, 2008, at Forward Operating Base Ramrod in Afghanistan.
Their Story
Colman Joseph Meadows III was a 19-year-old soldier from Senoia, Georgia. He served as a Private (PV2) with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Infantry Division based at Fort Hood, Texas.
He died on December 16, 2008, at Forward Operating Base Ramrod in Afghanistan's Kandahar province. The Department of Defense stated he was killed when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device during a patrol.
Meadows was deployed during a period of Operation Enduring Freedom marked by a resurgent Taliban and escalating violence. U.S. and coalition casualty figures rose significantly in 2008, with IEDs becoming the leading cause of death for troops in Afghanistan.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in his hometown newspaper, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals.
He is memorialized on the Georgia Fallen Heroes Memorial and is buried in Georgia. His battalion continued operations in Afghanistan for several more years.
