U.S. Army Sergeant John David Meador II, 36, of Columbia, South Carolina, died on June 20, 2012, in Khost, Afghanistan, from hostile action while serving with the 133rd Military Police Company.
Their Story
John David Meador II was a sergeant in the South Carolina Army National Guard, assigned to the 133rd Military Police Company, 51st Military Police Battalion, based in Timmonsville. A resident of Columbia, he was 36 years old at the time of his deployment to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. The 133rd MP Company had previously conducted security missions in locations including the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
On June 20, 2012, Meador was killed by enemy small-arms fire in the province of Khost, in eastern Afghanistan. He was part of a unit providing security and police mentoring in a region known for insurgent activity along the border with Pakistan. The Pentagon confirmed his death was the result of hostile action.
Meador's death occurred during the final years of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led combat mission in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in a phase focused on transitioning security responsibilities to Afghan forces, though intense fighting continued in provinces like Khost. The U.S. military casualty count for that year was 310.
Following his death, Meador was posthumously promoted from specialist to sergeant. His name was entered into the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day he died. The South Carolina National Guard and the 133rd MP Company publicly acknowledged the loss.
Sergeant Meador is memorialized on the South Carolina Fallen Heroes Memorial and on online veterans' memorials. His service is recorded in official U.S. Department of Defense casualty releases and state military archives.
