U.S. Army Specialist Andre Devon McNair Jr., 20, of Fort Pierce, Florida, was killed on June 5, 2008, at Kandahar Army Airfield, Afghanistan, while serving with the 96th Aviation Support Battalion.
Their Story
Specialist Andre Devon McNair Jr. was a 20-year-old soldier from Fort Pierce, Florida. He served as a wheeled vehicle mechanic with Company B, 96th Aviation Support Battalion, 101st Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
McNair was killed on June 5, 2008, at Kandahar Army Airfield. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device (IED) while on a convoy mission near the airfield.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2008, the conflict was characterized by a significant increase in insurgent activity, particularly the use of IEDs, which became the leading cause of casualties for coalition forces in the country.
McNair's death was reported by several news outlets, including the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, which noted he was the second soldier from Fort Pierce to die in Afghanistan within a month. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park in Fort Pierce and is listed on the 101st Airborne Division's memorial at Fort Campbell. His name appears on Panel 56E, Line 11 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
