Sgt. 1st Class Barett Wambli McNabb was a 33-year-old soldier from Chino Valley, Arizona. He was assigned to the 562nd Engineer Company, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state. The name 'Wambli' is reportedly Lakota for 'eagle'.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, McNabb died on June 12, 2012, in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. He was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol. The Pentagon stated his death was the result of hostile action.
McNabb's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2012, Kandahar province remained a major area of operations and intense fighting between coalition forces and insurgent groups, including the Taliban.
The Army posthumously promoted McNabb from staff sergeant to sergeant first class. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to Arizona, where he was buried with military honors.
McNabb was remembered by his unit as a dedicated combat engineer and leader. His family established a memorial scholarship in his name at his alma mater, Chino Valley High School, to support students pursuing vocational education.
