Lieutenant Colonel Michael Jerome McMahon, 41, of West Hartford, Connecticut, was a U.S. Army officer serving in Afghanistan. He was killed in action in Bamian province on November 27, 2004.
Their Story
Michael Jerome McMahon was a 41-year-old lieutenant colonel in the United States Army. He served as the executive officer for the 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, part of the 25th Infantry Division based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. His military career included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On November 27, 2004, McMahon was killed in Bamian province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he was conducting a dismounted patrol when his unit came under enemy small-arms fire. He was struck and died from his wounds.
McMahon's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By late 2004, the initial phase of major combat had ended, but U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in counterinsurgency and stabilization operations across Afghanistan.
The Department of Defense announced McMahon's death on November 29, 2004. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His funeral was held in his home state of Connecticut.
McMahon is memorialized on the 25th Infantry Division's memorial wall at Schofield Barracks. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown.
