Their Story
Jason Adam Mcleod was a 22-year-old from Crystal Lake, Illinois, who served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to Company E, 704th Combat Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, based at Fort Carson, Colorado. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On November 23, 2009, Sergeant Mcleod was killed by hostile action at Forward Operating Base Wilson in Afghanistan's Zabul province. According to military reports, the base came under indirect fire, a term for rocket or mortar attacks, which resulted in his death.
Mcleod's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009, the conflict was marked by a sustained Taliban insurgency, with attacks on coalition bases a regular feature of the war.
