Their Story

Joseph A. Mckay was a 51-year-old sergeant first class from Cambria Heights, New York. He served with the New York Army National Guard's Troop B, 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry Regiment, based in Jamestown.

Mckay died on June 26, 2008, at Forward Operating Base Shank in Logar Province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire during combat operations.

Mckay's death occurred during a period of intensified fighting in Operation Enduring Freedom. By 2008, Taliban forces had regrouped, and attacks using improvised explosive devices and direct fire against coalition bases were increasing, particularly in Afghanistan's eastern and southern provinces.

His death was reported by several news outlets, including The New York Times, which listed him among U.S. military fatalities. The 101st Cavalry Squadron held a memorial service for him and other fallen soldiers from the unit.

Mckay was one of the oldest American service members to die in the conflict that year. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on the website of the 101st Cavalry Regiment Association.
