Staff Sgt. Timothy Raymond McGill, 30, of Ramsey, New Jersey, was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier killed in Gardez, Afghanistan, on September 21, 2013.
Their Story
Staff Sgt. Timothy Raymond McGill was a 30-year-old soldier from Ramsey, New Jersey. He served with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, a Rhode Island-based Army National Guard unit. The 19th Group is part of the U.S. Army Special Forces, commonly known as the Green Berets.
McGill died on September 21, 2013, in Gardez, the capital of Paktia province in eastern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire. He was reportedly part of a partnered U.S. and Afghan security force operation in the area at the time of his death.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the 9/11 attacks. The conflict involved coalition forces, the Afghan National Security Forces, and insurgent groups including the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Gardez, located near the Pakistani border, was a frequent site of insurgent activity.
The Department of Defense announced McGill's death on September 23, 2013. He was posthumously promoted from Sergeant First Class to Staff Sergeant. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, according to military records.
McGill is memorialized on the Special Forces Memorial Wall at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Liberty, North Carolina. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Holmdel.
