Their Story
Sergeant First Class David Loren McDowell was a senior non-commissioned officer assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, based at Fort Lewis, Washington. The 75th Ranger Regiment is a special operations light infantry unit. McDowell, a native of Ramona, California, was 30 years old at the time of his death.
On April 29, 2008, McDowell was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a combat operation in the vicinity of Camp Bastion, a major British air base in Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he died from wounds sustained during a firefight.
McDowell's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2008, the conflict was in a period of intensified fighting as Taliban insurgents regrouped and contested control of southern provinces like Helmand.
His death was reported by major news outlets, including the Associated Press and the San Diego Union-Tribune. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor device and the Purple Heart.
