Lance Cpl. Joshua Brent McDaniels, 21, of Dublin, Ohio, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on June 12, 2011.

Their Story

Joshua Brent McDaniels was a 21-year-old lance corporal from Dublin, Ohio, serving with the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On June 12, 2011, McDaniels was killed in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense announced he died while conducting combat operations. His death was recorded as a result of hostile action, though the specific incident was not detailed in public casualty reports.

McDaniels died during the final years of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By mid-2011, a surge of U.S. forces had been deployed and was beginning to draw down, with intense fighting continuing in Taliban strongholds like Helmand.

His death was reported by the Defense Department and local Ohio media. He was survived by his family in Dublin. The Marine Corps honored his service, and his name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse.

Lance Cpl. McDaniels is remembered on memorial walls and in online tributes maintained by veterans' groups. His unit, the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, continued operations in Afghanistan until the mission's conclusion.
