U.S. Army Sergeant Jason James Mccluskey, 26, of McAlester, Oklahoma, died on November 4, 2010 in Zharghun Shahr, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Sergeant Jason James Mccluskey was a 26-year-old soldier from McAlester, Oklahoma. He served as an active-duty combat engineer with the 264th Engineer Company, 27th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On November 4, 2010, Mccluskey was killed in a hostile incident in the vicinity of Zharghun Shahr, a village in the Panjshir Province of Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died of wounds sustained from enemy small-arms fire while on a dismounted patrol.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By late 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations across the country.
Mccluskey was posthumously promoted from Specialist to Sergeant. He was survived by his wife and other family members. His body was returned to Oklahoma, where he was buried with military honors at the Oak Hill Cemetery in McAlester.
Sergeant Mccluskey is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in McAlester. His name is also inscribed on Panel 3R, Row 111 of the Oklahoma Veterans Memorial.
