Their Story
Shawn Patrick McCloskey was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier assigned to Company A, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. A senior non-commissioned officer, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa as part of the broader Global War on Terror.
On September 16, 2009, McCloskey died from wounds sustained during a firefight with insurgent forces in the village of Ghur Ghuri, located in Afghanistan's Farah Province. The engagement occurred during a combat patrol. He was 33 years old.
His death came during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting as international forces attempted to counter a resurgent Taliban insurgency, particularly in southern and western provinces like Farah.
McCloskey was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He was survived by his wife and children. The Department of Defense officially announced his death on September 18, 2009.
Sergeant First Class McCloskey's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Army Special Operations Forces Memorial Plaza at Fort Bragg. He is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated Special Forces engineer sergeant.
