Kyle Brenton McClain was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving with the 1433rd Engineer Company, 507th Engineer Battalion, 177th Military Police Brigade, based in Augusta, Michigan. He was 25 years old and from Rochester Hills, Michigan.
On August 1, 2012, Sergeant McClain died in Salim Aka, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on a dismounted patrol. The incident was part of a larger operation in Paktia province.
McClain's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2012, the conflict was characterized by counterinsurgency operations and advising Afghan National Security Forces, with eastern provinces like Paktia seeing frequent engagements.
Following his death, the Army posthumously awarded McClain the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His body was returned to Michigan, where a funeral service was held at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Rochester.
