Their Story

Sergeant First Class Johnathan Bryant McCain was a 38-year-old soldier from Mesa, Arizona. He served as an active-duty infantryman assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

On November 13, 2011, McCain died in the village of Talukan, located in Afghanistan's Ghazni province. According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, his death was the result of hostile action. A contemporaneous report from the Department of Defense stated he was killed by small arms fire while on patrol.

McCain's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His unit was operating as part of a surge of forces deployed in 2009-2011, a period marked by intense counterinsurgency operations in the country's eastern and southern regions.

Following his death, McCain was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. A memorial service was reportedly held at Fort Wainwright.

His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Arizona State Capitol. He is remembered by his unit and community as a senior non-commissioned officer with over a decade of service.
