Their Story

Kenneth Keith Mcaninch was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Before his deployment to Afghanistan, his service reportedly included assignments in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

On October 21, 2010, Mcaninch died at Forward Operating Base Sharana in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile action. According to contemporaneous reporting, his death was the result of an indirect fire attack, a term typically used for rocket or mortar strikes, on the base.

Mcaninch was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. His death occurred during a period of increased U.S. troop levels, known as the surge, which aimed to reverse Taliban momentum and strengthen Afghan government forces. The war at that stage was characterized by intense combat in eastern provinces like Paktika.

Following his death, Mcaninch's body was returned to the United States. He was buried with military honors in his hometown of Logansport, Indiana. The local newspaper, the Pharos-Tribune, documented the community's response, including a procession and memorial service attended by family, fellow soldiers, and residents.

Staff Sergeant Mcaninch is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Indiana State Museum and on online veterans' memorials. His name is also inscribed on the Logansport Veterans Memorial, ensuring his service is remembered in the community where he was raised.
