Their Story
Thomas James Mayberry was a 21-year-old specialist from Springville, California, serving with Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Bliss, Texas. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On December 3, 2011, Mayberry died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident in Haft Asiab, a village in the Zhari District of Kandahar Province. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small arms fire while on patrol.
Mayberry's death occurred during the final years of Operation Enduring Freedom, a period marked by a U.S. troop surge and subsequent drawdown focused on securing key population centers in southern Afghanistan, including Kandahar.
The Department of Defense announced his death on December 5, 2011. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.
Mayberry is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Bliss and on the online 'Faces of the Fallen' registry. His name is also inscribed on the California Central Coast Veterans Memorial in San Luis Obispo.
