Their Story

Jamie Odell Maugans was a sergeant in the United States Army from Derby, Kansas. He was assigned to the 710th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Detachment, based in San Diego, California. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On April 15, 2002, Sergeant Maugans was killed in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action. He was reportedly part of a team conducting ordnance disposal operations in the region at the time.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In early 2002, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in combat operations against Taliban and al-Qaeda remnants, particularly in the southern provinces like Kandahar.

The Army posthumously awarded Maugans the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. His death was reported in several Kansas newspapers, which noted his local roots and the return of his remains to his family.

Sergeant Maugans is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Kansas and on the Global War on Terrorism memorial at Fort Liberty, North Carolina. His unit, the 710th EOD, continues to be recognized for its hazardous duty.
