Sgt. Anthony Dennis Matteoni, 22, of Union City, Michigan, was a U.S. Marine killed in action on October 1, 2010, in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Anthony Dennis Matteoni was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines, part of Regimental Combat Team 1, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward. The 22-year-old from Union City, Michigan, was based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His service reportedly included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.
According to official records, Sgt. Matteoni was killed in action on October 1, 2010, in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he died while conducting combat operations. No further specific details of the incident were publicly released.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009, a surge of approximately 30,000 additional U.S. troops was ordered into the country, with many, including Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines, deployed to Helmand province to clear insurgent strongholds. The battalion was engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations in the region throughout 2010.
Sgt. Matteoni was survived by his parents and siblings. His body was returned to Michigan, where he was buried with full military honors at Riverside Cemetery in Union City. The local community held vigils and fundraisers in his memory.
He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial and the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Grand Rapids. Fellow Marines remembered him as a dedicated leader.
