Corporal Alex Martinez, 21, of Elgin, Illinois, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on April 5, 2012.
Their Story
Alex Martinez was a 21-year-old Marine from Elgin, Illinois. He served as a Corporal with the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, which was attached to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, part of the I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward. His unit was based out of Camp Pendleton, California.
On April 5, 2012, Martinez was killed during a patrol in the volatile Helmand province of southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident. The Marine Corps listed the cause of death as hostile.
Martinez's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2012, Helmand province remained a key battleground, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations against Taliban fighters.
Following his death, Martinez's body was returned to Illinois. A funeral service was held in his hometown of Elgin. The local newspaper, the Daily Herald, reported on the community's mourning and the procession that accompanied his remains.
Corporal Martinez was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is memorialized on the 'Faces of the Fallen' page maintained by The Washington Post and on the online casualty lists of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
