Their Story
Shane Robert Martin was a 23-year-old from Spring, Texas, who served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based at Camp Pendleton, California.
On July 29, 2010, Martin was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while supporting combat operations. The Marine Corps listed the cause as hostile action.
Martin's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict was marked by a significant troop surge, with intense fighting concentrated in Taliban strongholds like Helmand province.
His death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was survived by his parents and other family members in Texas. A funeral service with full military honors was held for him in his hometown.
