U.S. Army Specialist Ethan Jacob Martin, 22, of Lewiston, Idaho, died on August 7, 2012, in Koragay, Afghanistan, from hostile action.

Their Story

Ethan Jacob Martin was a 22-year-old specialist in the U.S. Army from Lewiston, Idaho. He served with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Richardson, Alaska. His unit had been deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On August 7, 2012, Martin was killed in Koragay, a village in the volatile Kunar Province of eastern Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death resulted from enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol. The area was known for insurgent activity.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with U.S. and coalition forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan National Security Forces. The eastern provinces, bordering Pakistan, were a focal point of combat.

The Department of Defense announced Martin's death the following day. He was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.

Martin is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery and on online veterans' remembrance pages. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial in Lewiston, Idaho.
