U.S. Army Specialist Chase Stone Marta, 24, of Chico, California, died on May 7, 2012, in Cisterri, Afghanistan, from hostile action.

Their Story

Chase Stone Marta was a 24-year-old soldier from Chico, California. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Troop C, 3rd Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

On May 7, 2012, Specialist Marta was killed in the village of Cisterri, in the volatile Wardak province of Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile enemy action. He was one of at least three U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan that day.

Marta died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His death occurred as the U.S. was implementing a troop surge and subsequent drawdown, with Afghan forces assuming greater security responsibility. The Taliban remained a persistent threat, particularly in eastern provinces like Wardak.

His death was officially announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, according to Army records.

Specialist Marta is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Chico campus of Butte College and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 3rd Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, continued operations in Afghanistan until the conclusion of the U.S. combat mission.
