Senior Chief Petty Officer John Wayne Marcum, 34, of Flushing, Michigan, was a U.S. Navy SEAL killed in a hostile incident in Bagram, Afghanistan, on September 12, 2008.
Their Story
John Wayne Marcum was a Senior Chief Petty Officer (SCPO) in the United States Navy, assigned to Naval Special Warfare Tactical Development and Evaluation Squadron Two (TACDEVRON TWO) based in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was a member of the Navy's special warfare community, commonly known as the SEALs, and had deployed to multiple operational theaters, including Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On September 12, 2008, Marcum was killed in Bagram, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense reports, he died from wounds sustained during a firefight with enemy forces. The incident occurred in the vicinity of Bagram Airfield, a major coalition base north of Kabul.
Marcum's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict involved coalition forces, the Afghan National Army, and insurgent groups, primarily the Taliban. By 2008, violence was intensifying in many regions of the country.
Marcum's death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in several news publications. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with combat 'V' for valor and the Purple Heart. His funeral was held in his home state of Michigan.
He is remembered on memorial walls for fallen SEALs and is listed among the more than 2,300 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom. His name appears on the Navy SEAL Memorial at the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce, Florida.
