Their Story
Jason Daniel Mann was a 29-year-old First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps from Woodlynne, New Jersey. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, which was deployed as part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On July 17, 2008, Mann was killed during combat operations in the Garmsir district of Afghanistan's Helmand province. According to U.S. military reports, he died from wounds sustained while engaging enemy forces. His unit was part of a major coalition effort to clear Taliban fighters from the strategic southern region.
Mann's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
