Their Story

Alexis Vicente Maldonado was born in Wichita Falls, Texas. He joined the U.S. Army and was assigned as a Specialist to the 510th Clearance Company, 20th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, based at Fort Hood, Texas. His service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.

On August 21, 2010, Specialist Maldonado was killed in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile action. He was 20 years old. Specific details of the incident were not widely released, but it occurred in a region known for intense insurgent activity and the widespread use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Maldonado's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, the war was at its peak in terms of U.S. troop levels, with a major focus on clearing Taliban strongholds in Kandahar, the group's historical heartland. Engineer units like the 510th Clearance Company were tasked with finding and neutralizing IEDs, one of the leading causes of coalition casualties.

His body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Wichita Falls. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations for his service.

Specialist Maldonado is remembered on memorials in Texas and at Fort Hood. His name is inscribed on Panel 6R, Line 127 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum. He was one of 499 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan in 2010.
