Madrazo, Nicholas Aaron
U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Nicholas Aaron Madrazo, 25, of Bothell, Washington, was killed in a hostile incident in Bagram, Afghanistan, on September 9, 2008.
Their Story
Nicholas Aaron Madrazo was a 25-year-old Marine Corps officer from Bothell, Washington. He served as a 1st Lieutenant with Combat Logistics Battalion 37, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, which was based in Okinawa, Japan. His unit, part of the Afghanistan Regional Security Integration Command-Central (ARSIC-Central), supported operations across multiple theaters, including Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On September 9, 2008, Madrazo was killed in Bagram, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his death resulted from a hostile incident. Bagram Airfield, a major U.S. military base north of Kabul, was a frequent target for insurgent attacks, including rocket and mortar fire, during that period.
Madrazo's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2008, the conflict was marked by a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and a resurgence of Taliban-led insurgent activity, particularly in the eastern provinces and around major bases.
The Department of Defense officially announced his death on September 11, 2008. He was one of at least 113 American service members killed in Afghanistan in 2008, according to casualty records. Public records indicate his remains were returned to the United States.
His name is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Washington, where he was a student in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program. He is also memorialized on online veterans' memorials and casualty lists documenting U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan.
