Maddox, Anthony Ranel
Sgt. Anthony Ranel Maddox, 22, of Port Arthur, Texas, died on July 22, 2013, in Landstuhl, Germany, from wounds sustained in Afghanistan while serving with the U.S. Army's 10th Brigade Support Battalion.
Their Story
Anthony Ranel Maddox was a 22-year-old sergeant from Port Arthur, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army with Company F, 10th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York. His unit was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On July 19, 2013, Maddox was wounded by enemy small arms fire in the Paktia Province of Afghanistan. He was evacuated for medical treatment to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, a major U.S. military hospital for casualties from the Middle East. He died from his wounds there on July 22, 2013.
His death occurred during the final years of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. The conflict, which began in October 2001, saw a surge of U.S. forces in 2009-2011, followed by a gradual drawdown. Combat operations for U.S. forces in Afghanistan formally concluded in December 2014.
According to the Department of Defense, Maddox was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His name is recorded on the Defense Casualty Analysis System and inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Drum.
Maddox is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated soldier. His name is listed on memorials in both Texas and New York, honoring his service.
