Russell Edward Madden was a 29-year-old specialist in the United States Army. He served with Company D, 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, which was based at Conn Barracks in Germany prior to its deployment.
On June 23, 2010, Madden was killed at Forward Operating Base Shank in Logar Province, Afghanistan. According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, his death was the result of a hostile incident. Reports from the time indicate the base was struck by indirect fire, which includes rocket or mortar attacks.
Madden's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, the conflict was characterized by a significant U.S. troop surge and intense fighting in eastern provinces like Logar, where insurgents frequently targeted coalition bases.
The Department of Defense officially announced Madden's death on June 25, 2010. He was survived by his family in his hometown of Dayton, Kentucky. His body was returned to the United States for burial.
Specialist Madden is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls and on local memorials in Kentucky. His unit, the 173rd Airborne Brigade, continued its deployment in Afghanistan following his death.
