Lyon, David Irvin
Capt. David Irvin Lyon, 28, of the U.S. Air Force's 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron, was killed by hostile action in Kabul, Afghanistan, on December 27, 2013.
Their Story
Capt. David Irvin Lyon was a 28-year-old officer in the United States Air Force. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, he was assigned to the 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On December 27, 2013, Lyon was killed in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, he was the victim of a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) attack that targeted a military convoy.
Lyon's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2013, the mission was in a period of transition, with U.S. and NATO forces drawing down combat troops and shifting to a train-and-advise role for Afghan security forces. Insurgent attacks, including complex bombings in urban centers, continued.
The Air Force confirmed Lyon's death the following day. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of captain. A memorial service was held at Peterson Air Force Base in January 2014.
Lyon is remembered by his unit and community. His name is inscribed on the Air Force Academy's War Memorial and on the Afghanistan War memorial at the Colorado state capitol.
