Their Story
Miguel Lorenzo Holmes was a 22-year-old soldier from Hinesville, Georgia. He served as a Specialist in Battery C, 1st Battalion, 118th Field Artillery Regiment, part of the Georgia Army National Guard's 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based in Savannah.
Holmes died on May 6, 2019, at Camp Dwyer, a forward operating base in Helmand Province. A U.S. military statement said he was killed by small arms fire during a combat operation. The incident was under investigation.
Holmes was deployed as part of Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S.-led NATO mission that succeeded Operation Enduring Freedom in 2015. The mission's stated objectives were to train, advise, and assist Afghan forces and conduct counterterrorism operations.
Following his death, Holmes's body was returned to Georgia. The Georgia National Guard and the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team publicly confirmed his death and expressed condolences to his family.
Holmes was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He is buried in Hinesville.
