Harry Burton
Harry Burton was an Australian journalist for Reuters. He was killed in an ambush on November 19, 2001, near Sarobi, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Harry Burton, 33, was a cameraman and journalist for the Reuters news agency. Based in Singapore, he had reported from conflict zones across Asia, including East Timor and Sri Lanka, before arriving in Afghanistan to cover the U.S.-led military campaign following the September 11 attacks.
On November 19, 2001, Burton and a colleague, Azizullah Haidari, were traveling in a convoy of journalists from Jalalabad to Kabul. Their vehicle was ambushed by unidentified gunmen on a mountain road near the town of Sarobi, approximately 60 kilometers east of Kabul. Both men were shot and killed at the scene. A third journalist in the vehicle, an Italian reporter, was wounded but survived.
The ambush occurred during the opening phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led invasion to dismantle the Taliban regime and target al-Qaeda. The route from Jalalabad to Kabul was a critical and perilous supply line, with the Taliban having recently retreated from the capital. The area around Sarobi was known for banditry and factional fighting among local militias.
The killings were condemned by media organizations and governments. Reuters editor-in-chief Geert Linnebank stated the news agency was 'shocked and devastated.' The Australian government confirmed Burton's death and offered condolences to his family. The perpetrators were never conclusively identified, with investigations pointing toward either bandits or rogue Taliban fighters.
Burton is remembered as part of a long list of journalists killed while reporting from Afghanistan. His death, and that of Haidari, underscored the extreme risks faced by journalists in conflict zones, even when not embedded with military units. The Committee to Protect Journalists classified his killing as a confirmed work-related death.
