U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Kevin Douglas Grieco, 35, of Bartlett, Illinois, was killed on October 27, 2008, in Pol-e Khosmi, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Kevin Douglas Grieco was a 35-year-old Staff Sergeant from Bartlett, Illinois. He served with Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery Regiment, a unit of the Illinois Army National Guard based in Sycamore. His military service included documented deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On October 27, 2008, Grieco was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the village of Pol-e Khosmi, located in Afghanistan's Baghlan Province. He was part of a joint U.S.-Afghan patrol operating in the area at the time.

Grieco died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2008, the conflict was marked by a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and insurgent activity, particularly in the country's eastern and northern provinces like Baghlan.

Following his death, Grieco's body was returned to Illinois. A funeral service was held at St. Peter Catholic Church in Geneva, and he was buried with military honors at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. The Illinois National Guard publicly confirmed his death and expressed condolences to his family.

Staff Sergeant Grieco was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is memorialized on the Illinois Fallen Heroes website and at the Global War on Terrorism memorial at the Sycamore armory where he was based.
