Edward Savy Grace was a 39-year-old sergeant from South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. He served with Company C, 1st Battalion, 182nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 26th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade of the Massachusetts Army National Guard, based in Braintree. During his military career, Grace deployed to multiple locations, including Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

He died on October 23, 2011, in Silver Spring, Maryland. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death was a non-combat incident. He was not deployed overseas at the time of his death.

Grace's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation's primary theater was Afghanistan, where U.S. and allied forces sought to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power. The Massachusetts National Guard's 26th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade had units deployed in support of this mission.
