Geary, Michael Erick
Lance Cpl. Michael Erick Geary, 20, of Derry, New Hampshire, was a U.S. Marine killed by small-arms fire in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on December 8, 2010.
Their Story
Michael Erick Geary was from Derry, New Hampshire. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served as a lance corporal with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, part of Regimental Combat Team 1, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On December 8, 2010, Geary was killed by enemy small-arms fire while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed his death the following day.
Geary's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in a major troop surge, with intense fighting concentrated in Helmand and Kandahar provinces against Taliban insurgents.
Following his death, Geary's body was returned to New Hampshire. A funeral service was held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Derry on December 18, 2010, with hundreds of community members and fellow service members in attendance.
Geary was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is remembered by his family and community, and his name is inscribed on the New Hampshire Veterans Memorial in Manchester.
