Freeman, Jameel Talib
Sgt. Jameel Talib Freeman, 26, of Baltimore, Maryland, was a U.S. Army infantryman. He was killed by enemy small-arms fire on August 11, 2011, in Nalgham, Wardak province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Jameel Talib Freeman was a 26-year-old from Baltimore, Maryland. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York.
On August 11, 2011, Freeman was on a dismounted patrol in the village of Nalgham in Wardak province. According to the Department of Defense, his unit came under enemy small-arms fire. Freeman was killed in the engagement.
Freeman's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. In 2011, the war was in its tenth year, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and efforts to train Afghan security forces.
Freeman's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His funeral was held in Baltimore.
Freeman is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Drum and on online veterans' memorials. His name is listed on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the Department of Defense.
