First Lieutenant Scott Joseph Fleming, 24, of Marietta, Georgia, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on September 17, 2010.

Their Story

Scott Joseph Fleming was a 24-year-old first lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. The unit deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 as part of Regimental Combat Team 7 under the I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

On September 17, 2010, Fleming was killed during combat operations in Helmand province. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations. The specific incident was not detailed in initial releases, but it occurred in a province that was a major center of insurgent activity and a focus for U.S. and allied forces.

Fleming's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, the conflict was marked by a significant troop surge, with intense fighting concentrated in southern provinces like Helmand and Kandahar. The goal of operations there was to clear insurgent strongholds and improve security for the local population.

Following his death, Fleming was posthumously promoted to the rank of first lieutenant. He was survived by his parents and a sister. A memorial service was held in Hawaii, and he was buried at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.

Fleming was remembered by his battalion commander as a courageous leader who cared deeply for his Marines. In 2011, a dedication ceremony was held at Marine Corps Base Hawaii for a physical fitness trail named in honor of Fleming and another fallen Marine from his battalion.
