U.S. Army Reserve Specialist Daniel Lucas Elliott, 21, of Youngsville, North Carolina, died on July 15, 2011, in Basrah, Iraq.

Their Story

Daniel Lucas Elliott was a 21-year-old from Youngsville, North Carolina. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army Reserve, assigned to the 805th Military Police Company, 535th Military Police Battalion, 290th Military Police Brigade, based in Cary, North Carolina.

On July 15, 2011, Elliott was killed at Contingency Operating Base Basra in southern Iraq. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained during a rocket attack on the base. He was the only U.S. service member reported killed in the incident.

Elliott's death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the final phase of the U.S. military mission in Iraq that followed the official end of combat operations. The period was characterized by a reduced U.S. force advising and assisting Iraqi security forces, but insurgent attacks continued.

Elliott's body was returned to North Carolina. A funeral service was held at the Youngsville Baptist Church, and he was buried at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Zebulon. The Department of Defense officially listed his death as the result of hostile action.

He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. Elliott is remembered by his family and community as a dedicated soldier who enjoyed outdoor activities.
