Michael Joseph Dutcher, 22, of Asheville, North Carolina, was a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was killed in action in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on September 15, 2011.

Michael Joseph Dutcher was a 22-year-old from Asheville, North Carolina. He served as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 8, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, California.
On September 15, 2011, Corporal Dutcher was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense stated he died from wounds sustained while conducting operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His unit was engaged in counterinsurgency efforts in the volatile southern region.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with intense fighting concentrated in provinces like Helmand and Kandahar.
