Domion, Alex Frank
Corporal Alex Frank Domion, 21, of Richfield Springs, New York, was a U.S. Marine killed in action in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on October 31, 2012.
Their Story
Alex Frank Domion was from the village of Richfield Springs in upstate New York. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a corporal to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On October 31, 2012, Corporal Domion was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he died from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.
Domion's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2012, Helmand province remained a major area of insurgent activity and a focus for U.S. Marine Corps operations.
Following his death, Domion's body was returned to his hometown. A funeral service was held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Richfield Springs on November 10, 2012, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. In 2013, a memorial scholarship was established in his name at Richfield Springs Central School, where he had graduated in 2009.
