U.S. Army Private First Class Adam Eugene Dobereiner, 21, of Moline, Illinois, was killed in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on November 18, 2011.
Their Story
Adam Eugene Dobereiner was a 21-year-old soldier from Moline, Illinois. He served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army, assigned to the 937th Route Clearance Company, 8th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, based at Fort Hood, Texas.
On November 18, 2011, Dobereiner was killed in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile enemy action from an improvised explosive device (IED) detonation.
Dobereiner's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The mission of his route clearance company was to locate and disarm roadside bombs, a primary threat to coalition forces in the region.
His body was returned to the Quad Cities area, where a funeral service was held. The Rock Island Arsenal conducted a dignified transfer ceremony upon the arrival of his remains.
Dobereiner was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is remembered by family and community members as a dedicated soldier who enjoyed sports and had a close relationship with his younger brother.
