Private First Class Ara Tyler Deysie, 18, of Parker, Arizona, was a U.S. Army cavalry scout killed in southeastern Paktia province, Afghanistan, on May 9, 2008.
Their Story
Ara Tyler Deysie was an 18-year-old soldier from the town of Parker, Arizona. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a Private First Class with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On May 9, 2008, Deysie was on a dismounted patrol in the southeastern region of Paktia province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, he sustained fatal wounds from enemy small-arms fire during the patrol.
Deysie's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2008, the conflict was characterized by a significant Taliban-led insurgency, with southeastern provinces like Paktia being areas of frequent combat operations and patrols by U.S. and allied forces.
Following his death, Deysie's body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Parker, Arizona. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other military honors.
Deysie is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Parker Veterans Memorial in Arizona. His name is also inscribed on Panel 53E, Line 28 of the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, which honors those killed in Afghanistan and related operations.
