Denier, Anthony Joseph
Lance Cpl. Anthony Joseph Denier, 26, of Mechanicville, New York, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on December 2, 2012.
Their Story
Anthony Joseph Denier was a 26-year-old from Mechanicville, New York. He served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On December 2, 2012, Denier was killed in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained during combat operations. His unit was engaged in Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led mission in Afghanistan.
Operation Enduring Freedom began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The Helmand province was a major center of Taliban activity and a focal point for U.S. and allied forces. By late 2012, the U.S. was in the process of drawing down forces and transitioning security responsibilities to Afghan troops.
Denier's death was reported by the Department of Defense on December 4, 2012. His hometown newspaper, The Saratogian, noted his passing and that he was survived by his parents and siblings. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Mechanicville Veterans Memorial Park. His name is also inscribed on Panel 30W, Line 107 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
