Patrick David Deans was a 22-year-old U.S. Army corporal from Orlando, Florida. He was killed in a hostile incident in Howz e Madad, Afghanistan, on December 12, 2010.
Their Story
Corporal Patrick David Deans was a soldier assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was 22 years old at the time of his deployment to Afghanistan.
On December 12, 2010, Deans was on patrol in Howz e Madad, a village in the Zhari District of Kandahar province. Insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. Deans died from wounds sustained in the blast.
Deans was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, the conflict was marked by a surge of U.S. forces, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on Taliban strongholds in southern provinces like Kandahar.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense. A local Florida newspaper, the Orlando Sentinel, noted his death among other service members from the area.
Corporal Deans was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Campbell and on online veterans' remembrance sites.
