U.S. Army Private First Class William Brandon Dawson, 20, of Tunica, Mississippi, was killed in a vehicle rollover near Combat Outpost Carwile, Afghanistan, on September 24, 2010.
Their Story
William Brandon Dawson was a 20-year-old soldier from Tunica, Mississippi. He served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army's 109th Transportation Company, 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, based at Fort Richardson, Alaska.
On September 24, 2010, Dawson was killed near Combat Outpost Carwile in Afghanistan's Zabul province. According to the Department of Defense, the vehicle he was in rolled over after it was struck by hostile fire.
Dawson's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The Zabul province, where he was stationed, was a known area of insurgent activity, and military convoys were frequent targets of attack.
His body was returned to the United States. The Army posthumously awarded Dawson the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Good Conduct Medal. A memorial service was held at Fort Richardson.
Dawson is remembered by his unit for his dedication. His name is inscribed on the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery wall in Newton and is included in the 'Faces of the Fallen' online memorial maintained by *The Washington Post*.
