Staff Sergeant Joshua James Cullins, 28, of Simi Valley, California, was a U.S. Marine Corps explosive ordnance disposal technician. He was killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on October 19, 2010.

Their Story

Joshua James Cullins was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. A native of Simi Valley, California, he was 28 years old and served with the 1st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Pendleton, California.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Cullins died on October 19, 2010, from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, southern Afghanistan. He was an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technician, a role dedicated to locating, identifying, and disarming improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other munitions.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In 2010, Helmand province was a major center of insurgent activity and the site of intense fighting, particularly during a coalition troop surge aimed at securing population centers.

The Marine Corps confirmed his death in a press release. His awards included the Purple Heart, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.

Cullins was posthumously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 2011, the Marine Corps dedicated an EOD training lane in his honor at the Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, acknowledging his service in a high-risk specialty.
