Their Story
Clark Arnold Corley Jr. was a 35-year-old sergeant first class from Oxnard, California. He served on active duty with the U.S. Army, assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bliss, Texas.
On December 3, 2011, Corley was killed in Haft Asiab, a village in the Panjwa'i District of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol. He was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in the same engagement.
Corley died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. Corley's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously promoted from staff sergeant to sergeant first class. The Army awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center. His name is also inscribed on Panel 31W, Line 72 of the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Sacramento, which includes casualties from subsequent wars.
