Their Story

Paul Edward Conlon Jr. was born in Somerville, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Conlon died on August 15, 2008, in Wardack, Afghanistan. He was fatally wounded during a hostile incident while conducting combat operations. Wardack is a district in Logar Province, south of Kabul.

Conlon's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. By 2008, the conflict had entered a phase of intensified counterinsurgency operations, with U.S. and allied forces engaging Taliban and other militant groups across the country's eastern and southern provinces.

Following his death, Conlon's body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held in his hometown of Somerville. The Boston Globe reported on the service, noting his family and community mourned his loss.

Conlon is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Massachusetts State House and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment memorial at Fort Campbell.
