Their Story
Ryane Glenn Clark was a 22-year-old soldier from New London, Minnesota. He served as a Specialist with the 57th Engineer Company (Sapper), 27th Engineer Battalion, 176th Engineer Brigade, a combat engineering unit based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On October 4, 2010, Clark was killed in Shekhabad, a village in the Zhari District of Kandahar Province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated during a dismounted patrol.
Clark's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, the conflict was characterized by a significant U.S. troop surge, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on Taliban strongholds in southern provinces like Kandahar.
Clark's body was returned to Minnesota, where he was buried with military honors. His death was reported by local media, including the West Central Tribune, which noted his family's statement that he was proud to serve.
Clark was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is memorialized on the Minnesota Fallen Heroes Memorial and the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Minnesota State Capitol.
