U.S. Army Specialist Robert Keith Charlton, 22, of Malden, Missouri, died on October 27, 2009, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany from wounds sustained in Afghanistan.
Their Story
Robert Keith Charlton was a 22-year-old soldier from Malden, Missouri. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Charlton was wounded by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol in the Arghandab District of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. He was evacuated to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where he died of his wounds on October 27, 2009.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2009, U.S. forces were engaged in a significant troop surge, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on southern provinces like Kandahar.
Charlton's body was returned to Missouri. He was buried with military honors at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield. His family and community in Malden held memorial services.
He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other military decorations. His name is inscribed on the Fallen Heroes Memorial in Malden.
